About H Squared

H Squared Communications is owned by Heather Hitterdal. She has 20 years of experience in communications, public relations, and marketing. She works full-time in marketing at a local non-profit and also serves communities and organizations on a freelance basis through her consulting business.

From 2013 to 2018, she led the communications efforts for the City of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In her role, she set the tone for how proactive and consistent communications could help a community stay safe and informed.

  • Created messaging around priority initiatives such as the construction and grand opening of the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center, the process to approve and build the city’s first public indoor aquatic center, the purchase of 10 acres of downtown land formerly owned by a rail line, and more

  • Provided public information during emergencies such as the 2013 ice storm, flash floods, and blizzards

  • Crafted the voice behind the City’s social media accounts and created guidance documents for their use

  • Organized and executed events such as news conferences, ribbon cuttings, groundbreakings, open houses, and more

Before her work in the public sector, Heather spent more than a decade crafting communications for two of the area’s leading health care organizations, Avera Health and The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society. Her background also includes experience in graphic design and printing, and she has received training in incident management.
